The Danube Delta is the best preserved delta in Europe and one of the most complex in the world, entered into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 as a biosphere reserve. A natural paradise stretches from the mouth of the Danube into the Black Sea, where the river ends its 2860 km journey. For centuries, the surface of the Delta has expanded due to the bank brought by the river, thus forming a network of channels, lakes, reed-covered islands, tropical forests, pastures and sand dunes that now cover an area of almost 5640 km2, of which 3446 km2 are found on the territory of Romania.
