The Danube Delta is the best preserved delta in Europe and one of the most complex in the world, entered into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 as a biosphere reserve. It is a major attraction due to the presence within it of a variety of vegetation and fauna - fish and ornithological. Here there is the richest and most varied ornithological fauna in Europe, namely over 300 species of birds, some of them declared natural monuments and protected by law.
A natural paradise stretches from the mouth of the Danube into the Black Sea, where the river ends its 2860 km journey. For centuries, the surface of the Delta has expanded due to the bank brought by the river, thus forming a network of channels, lakes, reed-covered islands, tropical forests, pastures and sand dunes that now cover an area of almost 5640 km2, of which 3446 km2 are found on the territory of Romania.
